PHL Embassy to OFWs in Yemen: Stay at Home this Weeekend

Aside from the deployment ban, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) recently raised the travel advisory to Yemen to alert level 2 because of the ongoing protests and demonstrations against Yemen President, Ali Abdullah Saleh to resign.

In connection with this, the Philippine Embassy in Sanaa released an advisory reminding Filipinos in Yemen to stay at home this weekend or limit their outside activities this Friday and Saturday.

Ezzedin Tago, Charge d'Affaires (CDA) to Riyadh said, "The Embassy team sent an advisory by email and SMS to the Filipino community in Yemen through their area coordinators on Wednesday, advising them to stay at home over the weekend and restrict their movement."

They also advised Filipinos in Yemen to prepare an emergency kit/bag that they can use in urgent situations. Likewise they should also ready important documents such as passport and visa. Also, they should always keep their commiunciatoon lines oipen for the Philippine Embassy.

DOLE Orders OFW Deployment Ban in Bahrain Again

Rosalinda Baldoz, secretary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), issued an advisory asking Carlos Cao Jr.,chief of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), Carlos Cao Jr. to "immediately effect the deferment in the processing and deployment of all newly hired workers to Bahrain."

The deployment ban is issued after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) released  a new travel advisory for Bahrain that raised travel alert from level 1 (heightened alertness) to level 2 (restriction of movements and voluntary repatriation).

 

The memorandum does not include returning workers from Bahrain. However they will be required to present an affidavit stating that "they know the security risk in the country but nevertheless voluntarily resume their employment in Bahrain."

Lifted: Work and Visa Restrictions for OFWs in Taiwan

Good news. The Council of Labor Affairs of Taiwan issued a press release that they are now returning the normal document verification procedures

for the application of Filipino workers. This means that the work and visa restrictions previously imposed by the government of Taiwan for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) is lifted.

Taiwan Minister of Foreign Affairs Timothy Chin-tien Yang said,"To express our good faith in response to your visits and the most recent measures taken by your government, we are lifting the restrictions on visa applications for all Filipino workers, effective immediately, and will resume the method used to process their work permits prior to February 7, 2011."

Advisories for Filipinos in Japan

As of 15 March 2011, 1:00 pm

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano announced today developments at two of the reactors of the Fukushima Number One Nuclear Power Plant. He said an explosion occurred at the No. 2 reactor of the said plant, and that there is a high possibility that the container vessel inside was damaged. Edano also said that the plant's No. 4 reactor is on fire, the cause of which was similar to that of reactors No. 1 and 3.


According to Edano, radiation levels reached 30 milisieverts between reactors 2 and 3; 400 milisieverts around reactor 3; and 100 milisieverts around reactor 5. He noted that the milisievert levels are higher than the microsievert levels previously reported. He said these are levels that affect human health but emphasized that the figures were obtained near the plant.


Edano urged the public to remain calm and continue their normal routines.

Japanese authorities made the following announcement with regard to these developments:

  2. Residents staying in the area from the 20-kilometer to 30-kilometer radius from the Fukushima Dai-ichi [Number one] Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Company, Inc. (TEPCO) shall stay inside the houses or buildings.

TESDA Offers Free Assessment and Certification

Some  60,000 skilled workers, OFWs, trainers and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates and graduating students are expected to benefit from the first National TVET Competency Assessment and Certification (NATCAC) Week which will be held on three separate dates this year across the country.

The first assessment will be held from March 28-April 1 in all TESDA centers and administered schools nationwide.

TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said if the students are able to hurdle all the required competencies, they will be given a national certificate which they can use in applying for jobs in fields that are highly in demand and good-paying.

The assessment and certification are free of charge.

Deployment of OFWs in Bahrain Now Allowed

The Philippine government decided to lift the deployment ban of OFWs to Bahrain as the political tension there had stabilized. As Bahrain is again considered a safe employment destination for OFWs, the POEA said that there are about 1,000 available job openings for OFWs there. While the deployment of OFWs in Bahrain is lifted, the ban in Yemen and Libya is still in effect.

DOLE Gives Php10,000 Cash Assistance to Repatriated OFWs

To assist overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) which are affected from the crisis in the Middle East, the secretary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Rosalinda Dimapiliz-Baldoz ordered the Overseas Workers and Welfare Administration (OWWA) to immediately extend help to qualified OFWs.

 

In response to DOLE's order, the OWWA Administrator, Carmelita Dimzon said that the Philippine government is offering Php10, 000 cash assistance to the repatriated OFWs from Libya.
