POEA; Beware of Job offers in Iraq & Afghanistan

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) partially lifted the deployment ban in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sadly unscrupulous individuals are taking advantage of this by offering fake jobs to aspiring overseas Filipino workers to these countries.

To help jobseekers, the POEA issued an advisory to remind everyone that any job offers to Iraq and Afghanistan is illegal or nonexistent because the deployment ban is still in place. 

According to Carlos Cao Jr., POEA administrator, “Illegal recruiters saying otherwise must not be believed and must be reported to POEA and other law enforcement authorities for legal action."

The POEA chief explained that the partial lifting of the deployment ban in Afghanistan and Iraq is only applicable to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) with existing contracts inside United States camps and facilities.

“OFWs with existing contracts inside US camps and facilities in the two countries — who will visit the Philippines, will be allowed by POEA to return to those countries,” he explained.

Successful applicants would be asked to attend a pre-employment orientation. To submit an application, one needs to register at POEA Manpower Registry system.

Qualified applicants who pass the interview and are successfully matched with a

Japanese institution shall undergo the three (3) months Preparatory Japanese

Language Training (PJL T) which is sponsored by the Government of Japan and

will be conducted at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority

• The processing of passports at Mobile Passport Services is guided by the Philippine Passport Act of 1996 and its implementing rules and regulations, other relevant Department Orders, Circulars and Memoranda.
• Participation in the Mobile Passport Services must be coordinated with the Passport Coordinator designated by the Local Government Unit (LGU) in advance. The designated LGU Passport Coordinator will collect copies of the application forms from interested applicants at least two weeks in advance of the scheduled date of the mobile passport service.
• The LGU Passport Coordinator will inform the applicant of the indicative time during which he or she will have to file the passport application on the scheduled date of the Mobile Passport Service.
• Personal appearance is a requirement for all passport applicants.
• The Mobile Passport Service will not accept applications for the replacement of lost valid passports but will entertain applications for lost expired passports.

Free Computer Training for OFWs in Saudi

Overseas Filipino Workers Cooperative Council (OFWCC), a Filipino group in Saudi Arabia will give free computer training for interested OFWs. The computer literacy seminar will start on September 9 and will run until November 4. 

Fortunato “Atoy" Esguerra of OFWCC said the short computer courses are available for OFWs who want to improve their computer skills with the current software applications using Windows-based programs. He also added that the project is part of OFWCCs continuing effort to help fellow OFWs improve their skills. 

The seminar will be held for eight Fridays starting on September 9 and will run until November 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Laparilla Restaurant beside Speed Cash Remittance Center (Samba).

The CLS Program Director, Robert Perez, said the participants will be trained on Windows 7 operating system, Microsoft Office 7 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access) and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
