Brief Advice to All OFWs

The decision to be an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) is life-changing. It is a great challenge that can make or break a person. This venture may bring lots of rewards but it is nevertheless far from easy.

An OFW may experience various kinds of emotions from sadness to triumph, joy or sometimes depression. For all Filipino workers abroad who need some guidance, here are some advices we can give you:   

  1. Be proud. As an OFW, you now join the ranks of the nation’s modern-day heroes. Your remittances help keep the Philippine economy stable. Aside from that, you also get to support your loved ones back home. Hey, you have a lot to be proud of.

  1. Keep in touch. No one can replace your family so don’t forget about them when you are already working abroad. Strive to bridge the distance by constantly calling or texting them. getting in touch is cheaper and easier these days so there is no reason for an OFW to drift apart from his family.  

  1. Strive for excellence. Doing your best at work will give you tremendous benefits and at the same time, you are proving to the world that Filipinos are excellent and competent workers.

  1. Save up for the future. You don’t have to send all your earnings to your family in the Philippines. Your stint as an OFW is not forever so you have to be conscious off your spending. Make sure that you save enough money so you can conveniently retire after your contract abroad.

  1. Know and strive to follow the rules. You should do some research about the do’s and don’t of your host country. You may not agree to all of the rules, nevertheless, you have to abide by the rules. It is wise to avoid all kind troubles while you are overseas.

  1. Respect the culture of your host country. The religion, language and beliefs of the people in your host country may be completely different from the ones you have grown up to. But that should not be a reason for you to laugh or look down on them. Remember that if you want respect, you should also be ready to give respect.

  1. Savor the experience. You may be working and living in a foreign country only for a limitedt time. In some way, it is like traveling for free. Take time to appreciate your hos country and the rare opportunity to be there.

  1. Take care of your health. Working hard is expected of you but it doesn’t means that you have to sacrifice your well-being. Keep your body strong and avoid illnesses by eating a balanced meal. You may also take vitamins and get much needed rest.

  1. Be updated with the news around you. Knowledge is power so you should know the latest news about our host country. Make sure that you know the location of the nearest POLO office or PH embassy and their contact numbers.

  1. Be happy. You are blessed because you have a good job and earning well. Don’t forget to cheer up and be grateful. A happy disposition will bring you success.
